"U Make Me Feel" by MK2

  • I'm impressed that one-third of the podcast is about the history of post-war korea until now just to explain the intro of the movie, which is the motive of the whole disaster. Just to add to the discussion, chemical pollution from the army base in korea may not actually create '괴물'(monster) in reality, but it is still an issue to be dealt with since some bases are now deactivated and are planned to be open to the public. Great podcast btw :)

  • I really enjoyed your review! Korean films are often very extreme and political because Korean society is very extreme, bong said. 2017, fascist president impeached and jailed by corruptions(with her Rasputin friend choi and samsung). One of the heroic prosecutor became attorney general. But, he is doing wrong thing at some point. He was considered as president material. He even met some media ceo and fortune-teller. And the people were mad, started to protest against prosecutor's office. The Reform bill was passed. The rumor was real. Attorney general's wife and mother -in -law are professional con man. (Korean prosecutor has both rights of investigation and prosecution. very powerful and political group./side effect of dictatorship48-88) Korean movie is not extreme compare to reality. But we are keep fighting. 2016-17 candle light revolution(sewol ferry tragedy and blacklist, corruptions, . . . )

  • Started off a class about art in politics and collective political movements in East Asia by discussing this movie. You did a really great job giving context, especially as Bong Joon-Ho has such an interesting relationship with Hollywood’s influence in his work which kind of seems like a microcosm of the larger fraught relationship between the US and South Korea. Memories of Murder is really influenced by the dysfunction of the 80s South Korean government and daily life and America’s influence in it, for example. Thanks for doing such a great job covering this and the social/historical influences.

  • North and South Korea were both led by two sweet looking old men but don't let that fool you. They were both ruthless dictators who dreamed of reuniting Korea (but I'm in charge) under their own regime. (Edit) This enraged their fathers who punished them severely.

  • I feel like most people forget that Japan in the early 20th century was very much so an imperial entity looking to overtake land and colonize for the benefit of their own country at the detriment of others. Thus, the annexation of the Korean Peninsula by Imperial Japan isn’t all that shocking if you understand how the country was operating during that period. I think we need to understand that the Japanese colonization of Korea was widely protested by many Koreans and it was violently suppressed by Japan. To this day there is a lot of anti-Japanese sentiment in Korea and it can be hard to argue against it. Tens of thousands of cultural artifacts were stolen, buildings significant to the country were demolished (a.k.a. the royal palace Gyeongbokgung), intense media censorship, forced assimilation, etc. It wasn’t a pretty picture and honestly shouldn’t be talked about as if it was.

      J CJ C3 måneder siden
    • It’s not just the government itself, although the government is messed up inside-and-out and send soldiers to die for their own gains, but at the same time, the Iraq War was a necessary war that the US soldiers wanted to be in because we knew there were terrorists who were ruining people’s lives in the Middle East and deserved to be erased from the Earth. ISIS needs to be also held accountable for their own actions and deserve the same fate.
